This project was years in the making and involved approval from Washington, D.C. The original building was a former bleach factory and on the National Historic Register but had fallen into gross disrepair.
The penthouse portion was added to the top of the original building but blends in seamlessly as it was done out of red brick and not your usual white box perched on top of a historical building
Due to the unique shape of the building, the penthouse is a terraced split-level and the only unit in the building with rooftop access and a 360 view of the City of New Orleans, from the French Quarter to the Marigny, the River, and CBD/Uptown.
It posed unique challenges with the Vieux Carre Commission and exterior approvals. Lightweight, removable chairs were used on the rooftop due to high winds. Indigenous sinker cypress was used to form a floating cafe ledge at counter height for drinking/dining with a priceless view. A built-in banquette was also added with custom awning striped cushions in addition to the comfortable bbq area and sofa/sling chair area with a concrete cocktail and side tables. The rooftop is terraced to match the inside levels. Retractable, adjustable umbrellas that reduce to the size of a fire extinguisher when not in use were specifically used on this project to meet strict VCC requirements and deal with high winds.
